The adventure begins at 8:00 AM with our guide and transport picking you up from your accommodation in Cusco. We will start our journey towards the Sacred Valley of the Incas, a place believed by the Incas to be a connection point between the earth and the cosmos, imbuing it with immense spiritual power.
Our first major stop is the remarkable town of Ollantaytambo. More than just a collection of stones, this is a sacred place that, according to legend, served as a refuge for the last Incas resisting the Spanish conquest. You will explore its charming cobblestone streets and admire the imposing terraces and urban design, a clear testament to the genius of Inca engineering and planning.
From Ollantaytambo station, we will board the Expedition train departing at 10:32 AM. This is not just a train ride; it is a 1.5-hour journey through the heart of the Andes, where the mountains are said to be alive, acting as guardians of ancient Inca secrets. As the landscape transforms from alpine valley to lush cloud forest, you’ll feel a deeper connection to the nature and culture that surrounds you.
Upon arriving in Aguas Calientes (also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo), a representative will greet you at the train station. They will escort you to your hotel and provide you with all the necessary instructions and tickets for your grand tour of Machu Picchu the following day.
The rest of the afternoon is yours to explore this vibrant town at the base of Machu Picchu. You can visit the artisan market, where local artisans share crafts inspired by Inca history, explore the butterfly sanctuary, or choose to relax in the town’s famous hot springs. Many believe that immersing yourself in these thermal waters before visiting Machu Picchu helps purify the body and absorb the energy of the sacred site.
An early start today takes you up to the main event: discovering the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. After a short bus ride up the mountain, you will enter the sanctuary. Your guided tour will lead you through the most important sectors, from the iconic viewpoint for classic photos to the Main Plaza, surrounded by temples that tell ancient stories. You will stand before the Temple of the Sun, perfectly aligned with the solstices; marvel at the Intihuatana stone, where Incas measured time by the stars; and feel the spiritual power of the Sacred Rock and the Temple of the Condor, ending at the magnificent agricultural terraces.
After the guided tour (approximately 2-2.5 hours), you will have some free time to continue exploring on your own or simply sit and absorb the breathtaking views of the Andes. Afterward, you will take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes, where you can have lunch before your train departure.
In the afternoon, you will board your train for the journey back to Ollantaytambo. As you travel, you’ll have time to reflect on your experience, realizing that Machu Picchu is not just a destination but a spiritual journey that touches the soul. Upon arrival at the train station, our transport will be waiting to take you on the final leg of your journey, returning you safely to your hotel in Cusco in the evening, concluding your mystical adventure.
