Itinerary

Activity #1 - Early Morning Pickup in Cusco

Hotel Pickup: Our guide and transport will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco’s historic center between 4:30 AM and 5:00 AM. We start early to enjoy the mountains with the best morning light and to ensure a timely return to Cusco.

Activity #2 - Breakfast Stop in Checacupe

We will travel south from Cusco for approximately two hours until we reach the district of Checacupe. Here, we will make a stop to enjoy a hearty breakfast to energize us for the day ahead. You will also have a brief opportunity to see a colonial-era bridge alongside an Inca bridge.

Activity #3 - Arrival and Acclimatization Walk

After breakfast, we will continue our journey by vehicle for about another 1.5 hours through stunning, remote Andean valleys until we arrive at the parking area and trailhead (around 4,700 m / 15,420 ft). From here, the walk to the main viewpoint is relatively short and gradual, taking only about 45 minutes to 1 hour. This gentle ascent is perfect for acclimatizing to the high altitude.

Activity #4 - Exploring Palcoyo and the Stone Forest

Upon reaching the main area, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the three distinct Rainbow Mountains of Palcoyo. Unlike the single mountain at other sites, Palcoyo offers a panoramic vista of colorful stripes across an entire valley. You will have plenty of time to explore the different viewpoints. A short, optional walk will also take you to the impressive Bosque de Piedras (Stone Forest), a fascinating landscape of towering rock formations that create a surreal, labyrinth-like environment.

Activity #5 - Return to the Trailhead

After soaking in the incredible 360-degree views, taking photos, and listening to your guide’s explanations about the geology and local culture, we will begin the easy walk back to our vehicle. The descent is quick and straightforward, taking approximately 30-40 minutes.

Activity #6 - Lunch on the Way Back

Once everyone is back in our transport, we will begin our journey back towards Cusco. We will stop again in the Checacupe area to enjoy a delicious and well-deserved buffet lunch featuring a variety of local Peruvian dishes.

Activity #7 - Return Journey to Cusco

With full stomachs and unforgettable memories, we will start the final leg of our trip back to Cusco. The drive takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. You can use this time to rest, look through your photos, or simply enjoy the passing Andean scenery as the afternoon light softens.

Activity #8 - Afternoon Arrival in Cusco

We expect to arrive back in Cusco between 4:30 PM and 5:30 PM. You will be dropped off at a central location near the Plaza de Armas, concluding a spectacular day exploring one of the Andes’ most beautiful and accessible natural wonders.
