Explore the lesser-known but equally fascinating South Valley of Cusco. This tour takes you on a journey through time, from the masterful hydraulic engineering of the Incas and the urban planning of a pre-Inca empire to the breathtaking beauty of colonial religious art.
Tour Duration: Approximately 6 hours.
Start Time: 8:30 AM – 9:00 AM
End Time: 2:30 PM (approximately)
Hotel Pickup: Our guide and transportation will pick you up between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM if your hotel is located within the historic center of Cusco.
Meeting Point: If your hotel is outside the pickup area, the meeting point will be Plaza Regocijo. We ask that you be ready by 8:45 AM. Once everyone is on board, we will begin our journey south of the city.
Our first stop is Tipón, an impressive example of Inca agricultural and hydraulic engineering. This large archaeological complex was a laboratory for agricultural products and a place of worship for water. You will be amazed by its spectacular terracing system, which is still fed by a network of perfectly designed irrigation channels that continue to function to this day. It is a true masterpiece that demonstrates the Incas’ deep understanding of their environment.
We continue our journey to Pikillaqta (City of Fleas), the only pre-Inca site in the Cusco region. This vast adobe city was built by the Wari culture between 600 and 1000 AD. As you walk through its long, straight streets and admire the remains of its two-story buildings, you will get a unique insight into the urban planning and social organization of a civilization that flourished long before the Incas.
Our final destination is the small town of Andahuaylillas, home to a true colonial gem: the Church of San Pedro Apóstol. Known as the “Sistine Chapel of America,” its simple exterior hides an interior of overwhelming beauty. You will be captivated by its walls and ceiling covered in stunning murals, its gilded baroque altars, and its collection of canvases from the Cusqueña School. It is a perfect example of the cultural fusion between Andean traditions and European art. (Note: Photography is often restricted inside the church).
After immersing ourselves in the art and history of the South Valley, we will begin our return trip to Cusco. The tour will conclude around 2:30 PM, with a drop-off at a central point in the city (usually near Plaza de Armas or Plaza San Francisco), allowing you to conveniently find a place for lunch or return to your hotel.
