Hotel Pickup: Our guide and transport will pick you up from your hotel in the historic center of Cusco between 4:00 AM and 4:30 AM. An early departure is essential to beat the crowds and ensure we have the best weather conditions for this challenging high-altitude trek.
We will travel south of Cusco for about two hours until we reach the town of Cusipata. Here, we will make a vital stop to enjoy a powerful buffet breakfast designed to provide you with the calories and energy needed for the hike. This is also a good time to use the restrooms and buy any last-minute items like coca leaves or water.
After breakfast, we will continue our journey for another hour by vehicle on an unpaved road that climbs steadily into the mountains. We will arrive at the trailhead at Phulawasipata (4,600 m / 15,091 ft). Here, your guide will provide a safety briefing and some final tips for the ascent. You will have the option to rent a horse from local community members for the majority of the trek if you are concerned about the altitude or physical exertion.
The trek to the main viewpoint of Vinicunca begins. The path is a gradual ascent for the first hour and a half, taking you through a stunning Andean valley with views of grazing alpacas, llamas, and the snow-capped Ausangate mountain in the distance. The final section of the hike is the most challenging—a steep, 20 to 30-minute climb to the summit ridge. Your guide will lead at a manageable pace, encouraging you to go “despacio” (slowly) to manage the altitude.
Upon reaching the top (5,036 m / 16,522 ft), you will be rewarded with the iconic, breathtaking view of Vinicunca, the Mountain of 7 Colors. The vibrant mineral stripes are truly a sight to behold. You will have about 30-45 minutes at the summit to take photos, listen to your guide’s explanation of the mountain’s geology and cultural significance, and simply marvel at the 360-degree panorama, which also includes the spectacular Red Valley.
After savoring the moment, we will begin our descent back to the trailhead. The walk down is much faster and easier, taking approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. It’s important to control your pace and watch your footing on the gravel path.
Once back at Phulawasipata, our vehicle will be waiting to take us back to the restaurant in Cusipata. Here, you will refuel with a delicious and well-deserved buffet lunch, celebrating your incredible achievement with your fellow trekkers.
With renewed energy, we will board our transportation for the final drive back to Cusco, which takes approximately 2.5 hours. This is a perfect time to rest and reflect on the amazing landscapes you have witnessed. We expect to arrive in Cusco between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM, concluding an exhausting but truly unforgettable day. You will be dropped off at a central point near the Plaza de Armas.
