Everything You Need to Know

Get quick answers to essential questions about tickets, altitude, safety, and more to prepare for your trip to Peru.

Yes, it is highly recommended. Tickets, especially for the Inca Trail and Huayna Picchu/Machu Picchu Mountain, sell out months in advance. We advise booking at least 3-6 months ahead.
The dry season (May to October) is considered the best for hiking and sightseeing, with sunny days. However, the shoulder seasons (April, November) offer good weather with fewer crowds.
We offer a wide range of tours, including classic trips to Cusco and the Sacred Valley, treks (Inca Trail, Salkantay), luxury rail experiences, and excursions to the Amazon, Lake Titicaca (Puno), and the Nazca Lines.
The Inca Trail is a restricted, four-day hike ending directly at the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) of Machu Picchu. Other treks like Salkantay or Lares offer alternative scenic routes that usually require a train/bus transfer to reach the citadel.
The Inca Trail is considered moderately challenging. While no technical skills are needed, a reasonable level of physical fitness is required due to the steep inclines and high altitudes. Training is highly recommended.
Yes, but tickets are separate from the main Machu Picchu ticket and are extremely limited (often 1-3 months advance booking is needed). Both mountains offer fantastic views but are steep climbs.
We recommend spending the first 1-2 days taking it easy, drinking plenty of water, avoiding heavy meals and alcohol, and drinking coca tea. Consult your doctor about medication (like Diamox) before your trip.
The official currency is the Peruvian Sol (PEN). US Dollars are often accepted in major tourist centers. Credit cards are widely accepted in cities and large hotels, but cash is necessary for local markets and small towns.
Peru is generally safe for tourists, especially in major destinations like Lima, Cusco, and the Sacred Valley. We advise always using licensed taxis, being aware of your surroundings in crowded areas, and leaving valuables secure at your hotel.
Due to variable weather, we suggest packing layers. Include lightweight clothing, waterproof jackets, comfortable hiking shoes, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and warm layers for the cold evenings and early mornings.
Citizens from many countries, including the USA, Canada, and most of Western Europe, do not require a visa for tourist stays up to 183 days. Please check the current entry requirements based on your country of citizenship.
PeruRail and Inca Rail enforce strict baggage limits for the trip to Machu Picchu (Aguas Calientes). Passengers are usually limited to one carry-on bag weighing no more than 5kg (11lbs). Your main luggage should be stored at your Cusco hotel.
